The Law in Focus April 2009
Philipsburg, April 6, 2009
On Thursday April 9, 2009 The Law in Focus will start a series of programs on changes as we build country Sint Maarten; also seen in a broader perspective, including the European Union.
The law is an integral part of our lives, an instrument to organize relationships between people. The law does not operate by itself, neither does it serve itself; it organizes relationships between government and its citizens, relationships between citizens with each other, but also between governments and its citizens as related to other territories.
In the process of dismantling the Netherlands Antilles, it behooves us as citizens of the newly to be formed island nation, to not only understand the government system of the new country Sint Maarten, but also understand our position and rights as citizens of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and by extension as citizens of the European Union.
In our program of April 9, 2009 we will bring you an interview with Dr. Mito Croes, discussing our position as citizens of the European Union, and the importance of us making use of our right to vote in the upcoming elections of the European Parliament on June 4th, 2009. Are you aware that you can vote, but have to register to do so before April 22nd, 2009 by filling out a form to be obtained from the Dutch Representative on the islands?
In subsequent programs we will bring you the position of the USM, as related to constitutional changes, and the importance of preparing our human resources, as well as an outline of the government system of country Sint Maarten, the new Ministries and the transformation from Island territory to country as presented in a Forum, organized on April 2, 2009 by the Department of Constitutional Affairs in collaboration with USM.
