Press Release

The Law in Focus August 4th 2008

The Law in Focus Continues to Turn Pages of History

Art. 1 of Book I of the Civil Code of the Netherlands Antilles reads: "All those present in this country have the freedom and the capacity to enjoy civil rights. Personal servitudes, of whatever nature and however named, are not tolerated". This however, has not always been the case within the territories of the Netherlands Antilles. Civil rights as we enjoy today are being taken for granted, and often times even misused to the detriment of others.

As we are turning pages of history, reviewing with our viewers and audience where we came from, where we are and yet have to go, we continue our special series in the month of August commemorating the abolition of slavery in the Caribbean. On August 7 we continue our conversation with Mrs. Denise Williams-Warner, a senior back office worker at the Census Office and Civil Registrar, to review pages of our Civil Registry, followed by Rev. E. Lloyd Brissett as our guest on August 14 and 21, discussing the role of the Methodist Church throughout the Caribbean notwithstanding official barriers during slavery, which was formally abolished on the Dutch side of the island in 1863.

On August 28 the series will culminate with a tribute to Senator Barak Obama, as the world will be turning an important page in recent history with his formal nomination as the first African-American to be nominated as a Presidential candidate in the USA. Just like Nelson Mandela no longer belongs to the South African people only, his recent trip to the various nations confirmed that Barak Obama is not just a presidential hopeful, but is considered an international hopeful to restore some balance in the complexity of today's world.
