The Law in Focus January 2008
Philipsburg, January 5th 2009
Programming for The Law in Focus for January 8 and 15, 2009 will be “Telecommunication”. While we hear and are aware of the many challenges ahead of us, it is important to focus our attention to all the opportunities that are before us.
Technology today is one area that cannot be neglected, and looking towards the future, the further development of telecommunication is a must. Bureau Telecommunication and Post is the entity within the Netherlands Antilles in charge of telecommunication. The scope of its operational activities covers among others supervision and control on telecommunication networks (that is local, cellular and long distance networks), radio and television broadcasting.
The Bureau is furthermore charged with the development and preparation of policies, rendering advice to government in this field, drafting legislation and exercising supervision for both Telecommunication and Postal Services. Non action in the area of telecommunication will mean taking steps backward as technology today does not allow us to slumber. Opportunities have to be identified and grasped as we learned from telecommunication expert Mr. Leon Williams, speaking at a forum organized by Bureau Telecommunication and Post, celebrating its 12 ˝ year of existence.
Bureau Telecommunication and Post was established on January 1, 1996 taking over the legislative, policy-related and advisory tasks of “Landsradio”. The Bureau resorts under the responsibility of the Minister of Traffic and Telecommunication of the Netherlands Antilles, and answers to both the pertinent Minister and the Council of Ministers. Questions and or complaints regarding radio programs can be directed to its offices in Curacao, Sint Maarten or Bonaire.
