Active and Passive voting rights discussed in The Law in Focus
Recent developments on the island have raised many eyebrows about a subject which is at the core of our democracy; participation of the citizens of the island, the country to be, in the political decision making process by means of elections.
The Law in Focus continues its series on Country SXM with a conversation with one of our constitutional experts, and member of the legal workgroup preparing the laws to establish country SXM, attorney Reynold Groeneveldt, who is no stranger in the community.
In a two part program we will be discussing among other issues our electoral laws, present and future, with a thorough look and explanation of active and passive electoral rights; a matter which needs clarification in light of recent developments on the island. Who is eligible to vote, eligible to be elected, and hold a seat in the legislative body; the Island Council, the Parliament of the Neth. Ant. and in the soon to be Parliament of the Country SXM.
The public is invited to tune in to understand and discuss the ongoing political matters on island level more informed.
